No, this is not a blog about Star Trek, but I thought the title very appropriate for the subject I am going to talk about. My job has had some interesting changes to put it nicely. Today I was told that our current director, who has only been in the position for 9ish months, will be moving to the president's office. Who will be the new director? Drum roll please ............... a student worker who will graduate in Aug. and is 21 years old, this being her first full time job. Previous director - 23 years of age. Director before that - 24. Director before that - probably about the same age. I just do not understand hiring someone with little job experience, and who does not quite have the maturity level to handle the position. When your parents are still able to ground you from driving at 21 because of a speeding ticket and they live 100's of miles away, I think this speaks to the kind of maturity I'm going to be dealing with. Some of you are probably thinking that I wanted this position. Nope. I have no desire to push paper all day and kiss the hands, and jump when the administration so chooses to desire it. This is not the only department on campus that is run by someone who has just graduated or soon to graduate. I guess when you hire people who do not have experience you can easily control them and what happens in each department. These kids in director positions is not a bad thing, but to be honest, I would like to work with someone who is mature enough that I can feel like I can bring work problems/concerns to knowing that they will be given due consideration and feedback. Maybe I am all wrong about this, but I just see about a million problems with placing someone this age in a position of power. After talking with the new director today, I am not looking forward to this new regime. It could be worse, lot's worse, but this is just not going to be pleasant, to say the least. Life is not easy, work is not easy and sometimes not fun, but it shouldn't feel like a mill stone around your neck.
